About Doreen

My “soul” purpose in reaching out to individuals and couples in the Inland Empire, and across the country, is to empower them to create loving, authentic and balanced relationships with themselves and others.

Doreen Van Leeuwen, Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A.I am a gay affirmative therapist. Gay affirmative psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy for gay and lesbian clients which encourages them to accept their sexual orientation, and does not attempt to “change” them to heterosexual, or to “eliminate or diminish” same-sex “desires and behaviors”.

I am an individual therapist. Individual therapy (sometimes called “psychotherapy” or “counseling”) is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.

People seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. A client and therapist may work together for as few as five or six sessions or as long as several years, depending on the client’s unique needs and personal goals for therapy.

I offer couples counseling, and the orientation of my couples work is Imago Relationship Therapy. Life is all about relationships, and Imago is THE most powerful path I’ve found toward creating a future of connected and loving relationships.

I love working with couples (engaged, married or living cooperatively, gay or straight). Energy spent arguing, fighting, avoiding or ignoring each other is transformed to discovering how to love your mate, and how to get what you need. If you’re ready to stop arguing so you can  get back to “that lovin’ feeling”, then I’m your therapist.

Another very successful therapy,  called EMDR, is used this to deal with trauma or “chronic” issues that get in the way of living your best life and having the best relationships. I use this approach equally well with individuals and couples, as it is quite compatible with Imago.

I’ve compiled lists of links and books that have been wonderful catalysts on my own journey. These personal recommendations can be found under resources.
